A wonderful late life set from Charles Aznavour -- an album of all jazz material, recorded with swinging backings from the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra! The tunes are all Aznavour originals -- some famous numbers, and some lesser-known gems -- and most tracks feature Charles singing in French, in a nicely mature version of that famous voice that first rose to prominence in the 50s and 60s. The style's quite different than an American jazz album -- given the song structure and phrasing -- but that's what makes it a really fresh set too, and a wonderful change for Charles at this point in his career. Soloists include Jacky Terrasson on piano, Jeff Clayton on alto, and Rickey Woodward on tenor -- and the set features guest vocals from Rachelle Ferrell and Dianne Reeves -- who both sing in English.
